The Cherwell Food History Studentship
The Cherwell Food History Studentship, created through the generosity of an anonymous, private donor, awards an immediate $1000 (US Dollar) award and a second payment, given at the Oxford Symposium, which covers the cost of attendance fees for the weekend, as well as transport to and from Oxford. Applicants must be 30 or under (i.e. not have celebrated their 31st birthday by the start of the Symposium).
This grant is administered and run by the American Friends of the Oxford Symposium on Food & Cookery. It is, however, open to (and intended for) applicants of all nationalities, native languages and level of academic attainment (no institutional affiliation is necessary, nor will one affect the outcome of the judging.)
Attendance at this year's Symposium is expected and the grantee should be prepared to present a paper based on the funded research at some point in the weekend. In order to assure compliance with the terms of the grant, applicants should supply proof of age (photocopies of photo ids) with the initial application.
Formal proposals should included detailed plans for research with an explanation of the project's scope and purpose. Originality, imaginative use of sources, literate style and coherent argument are the main criteria. Submit applications of no more than 1200 words no later than 10 February 2012 to the Cherwell Studentship judges by email to
